Why is ben happy? (and gloating only slightly)

Is it because New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman came by and listened to my quintet play outside the local Aspen bakery? Even gave us a dollar, although that’s only 20 cents a piece, which, well, I’m not sure it really matches up with his columns on the economy, is all I’m saying.

Or is it because one of my idols in the brass playing world, Mr. John Zirbel, the principal hornist of the Montreal Symphony

told me beautiful job about my concert the other night, and thus I can now quit trombone happily, if I so desire?

Or maybe its the fact that my quintet pulled in 63 dollars in tips tonight, per person? That means that in the course of 2.5 hours, we pulled in 315 dollars!

Personally I think it was the Chase Utley Phillies shirt I wore,

and the commiserating I did with the other Pennsylvanians in the crowd, but that’s just my take.

To all in the rest of the world beyond the small bunker of Aspen, CO, if you want to see/hear any of the music festival concerts for the last two weeks (including tonight’s, in which the trombones let loose) go to this amazing website run by two stylish french men! And enjoy

when i think of basement jaxx, i think of mgd commercials and frat parties (if i remember the commercial correctly). but there has been one song of theirs that has been in my rotation with consistent irregularity for quite some time that i heard a while ago in my sister’s car. the other song has a billie jean thing going on, although granted it loses it pretty quickly, but it still manages to find a way to keep things interesting.

i’ve been reading this book about the history of french music from 70s disco to 90s house and hip hop, and phillippe zdar is a name that came up recently. together with boom bass, zdar is part of a due making french house music. apparently in the earlier part of his career, he was more into sampling and later faded away from this. this track, feelings for you, has a great sample making it catchy and the groovy bass underneath takes it to the next level. all i could get my hands on was this video:

the consolation prize contributes in its own way, translating the bass into a more mechanical sound that rips and shreds:

alas, this should not go unmentioned:

after coming across this video on youtube several months ago, i’ve been imagining that a good quality version of this song existed. this is however what i was able to find, and i hope that if it is indeed unrecorded that they will use it somehow in the not so distance future.

crystal castles – baptism

also, i was going to post van she’s sex city, because it is indeed great, but i don’t have it handy…

digits

digitalism is the shit. i am not listening to them all the time, but it’s something i can always come back to. this mix is great, and the next time i see them play, this makes me hope that it is to be a dj set. i feel like i’ve lost touch with them a little bit, aside from certain recognition, i’d like to know more of what they’re playing these days.

The most appropriate topic for my first post in the collective Zilber blog would be food. This afternoon, a trio of Zilbers enjoyed Father’s Day brunch in South Philadelphia. The menu included (sorry for the poor quality pictures):

-kiwi mango banana smoothies

-prosciutto topped with homemade creamed spinach and sunny side up egg baked in a muffin tin

-banana walnut flax pancakes

-(not pictured) strawberry rhubarb bread pudding with refreshing mint iced tea

Five hours later I am still full!
