things i like about texas already:

  • almost every restaurant i enter is big and food is served cafeteria style, making it really comfortable to stay forever and do work…
  • the restaurants in question often provide unlimited chips and salsa
  • they also have a paper towel dispenser instead of napkins
  • they sometimes use styrofoam plates and plastic silverware, IN the restaurant

The Menil collection – walking through it, it seemed like it was designed for my family.  The emphasis on craft will cause emily to flip out (the only paintings were basically surrealist and mark rothko), the entire cy twombly gallery will make dad nuts, mom will love the rothko chapel and barnett newman obelisk, there is one room of african art owned by surrealists that is about the most stunning array i’ve ever seen, jon will appreciate the wild lighting (both natural and artificial) throughout the buildings, ray will like the african masks with dog hair attached.  its damn near perfect.  not only that, but everyone was nice, and at 5 pm on a wednesday i basically had the museum complex to myself.  the twombly gallery i really did have to myself, which was so relaxing and peace-inducing.

so i’m slowly getting my handle on things, hopefully it continues…
